Water Pump Leaking

I am a new homeowner, I purchased a foreclosure so was not able to find out much about the house. My sprinkler system is working however, when I turn the water on to the pump, it sprays out 2 openings on the side. The sprinklers are all working, but this is wasting a ton of water. I am not sure what kind of pump it is or how to tell. I am a single mother who is somewhat handy but just can't seem to figure this one out. Does anyone have any ideas?
