Construct swing joints instead of worrying about finding shorter sprinkler heads.

Need to change to shorter sprinkler head

Several sprinkler heads have migrated up and are repeatedly getting clipped by the mower. Bought 4 inch heads but the male attachment in the ground is too big. Bought adapter but can't get the old one off. It is at a terminus, not a "T" so it is and "L" shaped attachment. It should just screw off no? Afraid of damaging pipe holding it with pliers. Do they use some sort of cement when installing so that I would half to cut the end off? Thanks.
