Hunter PRO-C 300 Controller Self activation

Hunter PRO-C 300 operated properly for years. While away system was left in RUN position. Although no watering was scheduled that day, the pump started with no valves open causing the out put pipe from pump to burst. Neighbors tried to turn off pump with Controller off switch without effect. Only way to shut down pump was to turn off pump at the Main sub panel. I assume the controller shorted out (lighting???) completing the AC power circuit to the Pump. Any experience with this sort of failure??
