whats a "clox"?????

Boots, I think Tony (Sprinkler Guy) might be referring to the old "hot common" Irritrol clox.... much like the old radios you refer to that we've both obviously worked on
I've noted, too, that most all the better clox today have a position for an "earth ground" wire...
PIA as it may be, it's a good idea... gives a great path for lightening and really "lights up" those MOV's!!!

You can reverse polarity on the input of a class 2 transformer? I have an old radio where the wrong polarity would give you a 'hot' chassis, and they didn't even have a polarized plug on the two-wire line cord. Better yet, it was a school project, where you'd think safety would be paramount.

Reverse Polarity can be very dangerous on components like this.....or a table lamp.

Agreed on color to color, I mean, how much would a proper line cord cost? The Irritrol controllers don't have any internal connections to the 120 wiring. Just a class 2 transformer with a conduit connection for the input side. Do you find many controllers that have an earth ground in the circuitry? Or a neutral? Even the most bulletproof of the old mechanical controllers didn't seem to ever tie any part of the output to ground or neutral.

Swapping the hot for neutral at the clock doesn't make a bit of difference as the CLOCK sees it, BUT when checking for voltage in an clock or LB box (trying to see if there's 110VAC available or ir a Txformer is out, for example) I sure wannna KNOW which of the incomming wire IS THE HOT ONE!!!
If the color coded wires from the transformer on the 110 side are swapped, a FULL 110 volt POTENTIAL exists in any grounded part of the clock!!!
ALWAYS wire white to white, black to black, and green to ground, not neutral!!!
In the case of most flatwire Pigtails, some have a multi-grooved side running down the wire. This is the neutral lead. Better yet, use a VOM to check which is which and we'll ALL be better off...
I've been zapped by too many WHITE neutral wires, so ALWAYS wire to code...... It only takes a couple minutes to check and make sure you're RIGHT!!!

Just hook the green wire up. Flip a coin on the other two. It works both ways.

I am not sure what you mean by pigtail, but yes this is an outdoor timer and this timer plugs into a socket and I imagine it could be hardwired into the pump or house but I figured why go through all that mess when there is a plug right there from previous owner and I know that plug works.

I'm assuming this is an outdoor timer and you're hooking a pigtail/cord up to it. The green wires go together obviously. With the other two it makes no difference. Left/right or right/left. Good luck!
