Scott, It sounds like you may have black poly pipe as your piping with a hole in it. If so, turn off the water to the pipe, cut the pipe in half at the hole. Use an insert coupling to connect the pipe back together. It sounds like you have a bad diaphram. If you are haveing problems with a valve, I suggest you replace the entire valve and not just pieces of the valve.

Any of the brand rain shut off devices will work with any brand controller. The rain shutoff device splices into the ground wire as it comes to the controller and when it rains the device acts like it is cutting the ground wire and then as it dries out it reconnects the ground wire. Todd, You install the EZ-Green unit after the pump outlet and after the backflow prevention device (if you have one) but before the mainline splits up top feed the zone valves. You install a tee in the mainline to allow a 1/2" line to feed the top of the EZ-Green unit. Use PVC pipe, Tees and Elbows as needed to construct a manifold where you want to install more than one valve. This method of "hard piping" the valves in using glue will eliminate the possibility of leaks.
It is best to convert from copper pipe to PVC pipe once you leave the house and head outside. PVC pipe is easier to use and handle. I would think that for most burps by the device the 5 gallon bucket would be alright, however, if the device ever malfunctioned, you could end up with a mess in the basement unless you somehow pipe the outlet of the RP device to drain outside or to a drain pipe.
