Renting a Pipe Puller

I rented a trencher that they delivered on a flatbed (?!); nothing like the little ones I had seen on DIY or HGTV shows. The guy from the rental place spent 45 mins showing me how to use it. Aside from a little run-in with one of my garbage cans, everything went fine.

When to start watering?

I've got my timer kicking off at 4am and each grass zone gets 1.5 hours of watering twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays (shrub zones are different). I have good head to head coverage and good pressure, the zone times overlap, and I'm done by 6:45. It doesn't interfere with morning showers and I've got a really nice looking dark green lawn. ( btw: I live on Long Island, so the grasses and climate are similar to CT. )

Toro Valve reliability?

I'm going to replace them with a different brand (Irritrol perhaps) as they fail in the future. Toro tech support was barely sympathetic when I called them: they implied the failures were due to having the lines blown out in the fall.

Toro Valve reliability?

Last year (spring 2002), I installed my own system will all Toro hardware. When I fired up my system this year, 4 of my 9 valves failed and needed to be replaced (#53380 3/4" in-line valves). I had the system blown out by a local irrigation company in November. Granted, NY had a nasty winter this year, but a 50% failure rate seems awfully high. So, any ideas on what's going on? 3 of the failed valves would not open; the other opened, then would not close when that zone's timer expired. Do I need...
