sprinkler systen spitting water when using irritron.

I recently tried to use my automatic sprinkler system an irritron, When I first wired them up, they wouldn't turn on so I went and bought new solenoids. when i got them to turn on by zone, the sprinklers would spit out water and there sounds like hammering in pipes. When I turn on the valves manually they work fine. No spitting no hammering. I also noticed that when I put a 9 volt battery the screen got brighter. Its not the solenoids, is it my irritron? some one suggested that its probably not putting out the required 24 volts. please help.
