Finding a sprinkler input leak

My sprinkler system is lake fed with about 50' of 2" pipe from the pump to the lake and another 30' of pipe to an intake screen. After replacing a broken fitting just at the water line and replacing an old 1.5HP pump, now I cant't get the system to stay primed. We put a new check valve just a couple of feet from the intake screen (underwater) since we didn't know where the old one was and not sure why it now won't not stay primed. After filling the pump for priming, it runs fine, but after maybe an hour the water level in the pump is down about 1/2 gallon. Even if it sits for multiple days it takes nearly exactly the same amount to fill to the top of the prime opening. Does the amount of water needed to fill to prime level help to determine where the system is losing water? One repair company only recommended replacing the entire line for more than $1000 but with no previous issues it seems there is something simpler than can be done.

What make and model was the replacement pump?

You might want to add another check valve, near to the pump.
