detecting leak

Hello,
I have a small leak either in the piping/manifold from the backflow to the valves or one or more valves are leaking.
How do I detect which one is the is issue? Is the only option to dig up the supply pipes and check?

If I turn off the water to the irrigation system, no zones are running, and wait for 10-15 minutes then turn back on the water I hear water flowing filling up the manifold and downstream lateral lines since valves would open if pressure is lost. Am I correct to suspect a leak? I also have a household water monitor (e.g. phyn, flo) and it senses a minor pressure drop when the water to the irrigation system is on (but no zones are running).

Thanks,
-MJ

I do have a follow up questions. Irrigation valves stay closed under water pressure. If I shutoff the water after pressurizing the main line should they remain closed or will they gradually open only if there is a leak? I do hear a rush of water filling up the main line/manifold when I turn on the water back.
