Rain Dial wiring installation

I recently moved into a rental home and found the sprinkler controller had been removed by the previous tenant. All the wiring is exactly the same (red) and very heavy gauge. My landlord has no idea on how to fix, but will reduce my rent if I can. Can anyone tell me how to fix? Is there a way to fix? [V]

Label the wires. Get a VOM at Radio Shack, or borrow one, and measure resistance between the wires. Make a chart of all the combinations. One wire, and one wire only, should have a similar resistance to the others. That one wire will be the common. The others will be individual zones.
