Hose clamps and poly pipe

I'm using PVC for my laterals. To attach the sprinkler heads, I am using PVC female threaded fittings that have plastic barbed fittings screwed into them. I'm using poly pipe for the run from the lateral to the sprinkler. These are clamped down with hose clamps.

My problem is this... I think I'm really tightening the hose clamps, but the water is still leaking out of the fitting (at the poly and barbed end connection). I've looked online and I'm using the same type of fitting sold for poly pipe. So, am I just not tightining the hose clamp enough? Short of breaking the barbed fitting, can you get them too tight?

Is the clamp positioned over the barbs on the poly pipe fitting?

Um, no. I was putting them closer to the end of the poly, after the barbs. Is that what I'm doing wrong?

You also want to make sure the barb fittings are fully inserted into the poly pipe. Pushing them in only half way may cause them to leak or even come out of the pipe later on down the road.
