locating existing irrigation system lines

I recently purchased a home with an irrigation system, however the seller couldn't locate the drawing showing the system layout. I was told the system hadn't been used in about 2 years also.

Not being familiar with irrigation systems, can the layout be "located" similar to the public utilities before one digs?

If the system can't be located by automatic means, I assume that the "hit and miss" method of location is my only alternative.

TIA

Just curious but why are you trying to find the lines?
Thanks,

Pete

Landscaping. The yard is, for the most part, treeless, plantless, etc. Will eventually want to minimize the amount of grass cutting that is currently taking place now. I'd rather be proactive -vs- reactive when it comes to the unknown. Reactive procedures too often lead to frustration, making me an unhappy home owner.

Just locate the valves and heads. The rest will have to take care of itself. No one ever denied themselves landscaping because of potential sprinkler damage, and repairing/rerouting sprinkler pipes is just part of the process.
