Valve configuration

When designing a system should one consider a master valve before all zone valves? Is there a recommended wiring configuration if a master valve is used?

A master valve serves as insurance against a stuck-open zone valve, but it also presents the possibility of a stuck-closed master valve. My first choice at a valve upgrade would be for valves with flow controls.
