Rain Bird ASVF Series
Do i need a standard back flow device if i use the rain bird asvf series control valves with back flow prevention

No. They already have the backflow device in them. Just make sure that you have them installed at least 6 inches above the ground.
Go to the Rainbird site http://www.rainbird.com/pdf/turf/ASVF_Manual.pdf
You will find that Rainbird says "Do not use this anti-siphon valve as a mainline backflow device nor as a master valve."
Anti Siphon valve has a backflow prevention device inside, this valve acts as a backflow and a valve. If you decide to use inline youwill have to install another backflow preventor, before the valves. Remember for these to work properly, you must install them 6" above the highest sprinkler head!!
