pump shut off

I have a pump on a irrigation ditch and need to have some sort of sensor or?? to shut off the pump when we don't have water. I could put in a tank with a float valve but would rather not. Are there any other options?

Can you explain more in detail what your trying to do? What kind of pump is it? How big or long is the ditch? Etc.....
