Nelson 6005 vs. 6000 Rotor Head

I am replacing some old Nelson 5090 sprinkler heads (plastic riser)and noticed that Nelson now has a Model 6005 head with a stainless steel riser. I have had some problems with scoring of the old plastic risers with the result that they stick and will not retract. When this happens I take them apart and use a crocus cloth to smooth the surface before re-installing them; however, this doesn't always work. Is the 6005 stainless steel riser that much better (than the 6000 with plastic riser)in this service to warrant paying twice as much? Has anyone compared the relative life of the two type?

Thought the stainless steel risers are more durable, In your case, I don't know that it would warrant the extra expense. I believe I would stick with the 6000 series instead. Nelson offers a five year warranty on all of their rotors (for any reason). So with that being said, just return them for warranty exchange when you see they are having problems.

If your soil is particularly sandy or gritty, most any head will wear down prematurely, and stainless steel risers won't help much. Installing a head so that the soil can't get at the seal is one good way to avoid this problem. (the heads will seem too high, at first, but the grass will catch up, and you might need to raise the heads again)
