Hi...thanks for posting....

It is quite simple really and like anything else, most of us have our own technique. Here is how I do it:


go outside to backflow preventer and turn the incoming valve to the off position (this is the valve at the bottom of the backflow on most backflows...or the valve closest to the pipe coming out of the house)

Make sure any drain caps....on the elbow or somewhere on the pipe coming out of house....are in the closed position as well.

Go to basement/crawlspace/waterheater closet or wherever the water tap is....turn that drain off and open the water valve slowly....allowing the water to fill the pipe to the outside.

Go outside and ensure that all drains in all valve boxes are in the closed position and all bleed screws etc on all valves are closed.....and / or solenoids are closed/ turned to off position.

Make sure test cocks....are in closed postition and open water valve at bottom of breaker that you had shut earlier.....allowing water to fill the system.

Check valve boxes for leaks, check backflow for leaks....turn each zone on with timer and check each head for proper adjustment and/or leaks.

Anything that has happened over the winter should show itself if it is bad....otherwise you should be good to go.
