Do I connect compressor to Test Port or Plug

I want to close my sprinklers myself. I just bought for automobile work a 33 gallon compressor.

I see references to useing either the drain plug port or the test port as the location to hook up the compressor. For the test port, is there a special fitting I need to use or is it a pressure valve that will open once I screw in a compressor fitting and blow about 40psi though it.

Or is it better to use the drain port, removing the plug and screwing in a fitting.
