Hardie Sprinkler flashing

I have a Hardie 600, 900 or 1200 system. I have gradually lost use of my automatic watering system in the follwoing sequence:

1. Display flashing
2. Change Battery
3. Display flashing but watering continues at designated times with flashing display.
4. Eventualy watering cycle ceases
5. Manual override from controller
a. turn off electricity to stop flashing display
b. detemine zone to water
c. set time
d. push manual override
e. turn on electricity
6. Eventually this does not work

I must have a short but not sure where to begin?
