SVC Timer and Latching coil

My SVC timer has failed (no readout with new battery). I cut the red and black wires and applied 9V to the wires and the sprinklers turned on fine. When I removed the 9V the sprinklers do not turn off. My question is: Is the latching coil just screwed into the valve? If so can I just unscrew it so the sprinklers will turn off until I can obtain the replacement parts?
Thank you,
Art
