backflow preventer oveflowing

I had to replace the bonnet and poppet on my backflow preventer when I went to turn on my sprinkler system. However, when I turn it on with minimal water pressure, water comes up over the top of the new bonnet and poppet. I'm afraid that if I turn the water pressure higher, it will simply blow the bonnet and poppet again. Any ideas on what might be causing this? Could it be a problem with the check valve? How do you determine if the check valve needs to be repalced?

Close the valve downstream of the bonnet where the water is coming from. Now turn on the supply and open it completely.

Thanks! That worked and my sprinkler system is back online!
