Wire Gauge

We bought a house with an existing sprinkler system, although not automatic. I am planning on adding automatic valves, controller, pump relay, etc. I've read that 18 gauge wire is the proper wire to use for burying, but I have to run 125 ft. of wire from the valves to the controller at the house. Will 18 gauge be alright running that distance or should I run a lower gauge wire like maybe 16 gauge?
