programing trouble on rainbird esp-m controller

I have been using the esp-m all summer long and have had no issues until I turned the timer to off for a day to fertilize.
I went to put it back to auto and it shows a alarm. It says I have no start times. I went in and reprogrammed the system and keep getting the same error. The controller will allow me to change the values but as soon as I turn the selector dial they seem to go back to a default setting. I am having the same trouble with start time, run time, seasonal adjustment and pretty much every other setting on the controller.
I have reset, unplugged, pulled the battery and even beat it up a little and still nothing.
any help would be appreciated

Have you tried replacing the battery for a new one?
