Karen,
Place the drain valve in the piping after the control valve. Face the drain valve down. In other words, locate the lowest spot on the piping of a zone or section after the control valve for that section. At the lowest spot insert a tee or elbow (which ever is needed) and face the 1/2" female pipe threads of the tee or elbow in the downward position. Screw the drain valve in place (facing downward). It is always better to dig a deep hole below the drain valve and fill it with pebbles to allow the water to drain away from the drain valve. The drain valve is designed to drain the piping after the valve once the valve for that section or zone is turned off.
