Will most valves work with 24V DC

I need to add another valve but have run out of stations
I tried powering up the new valve using an old 24 V DC supply and it worked.
Was I lucky or do most valves work on DC supply?
Are there any problems using 24 V DC?

Don't do it - just get the proper controller for the system - 12 volts DC is closer to what a 24VAC solenoid could run on, if you run it on DC voltage
