new sprinkler system install recommendations

Good evening everyone,

I am looking into installing a underground sprinkler system myself. My yard is 40x40 square that I will sprinkle and I am on city water. I have never installed one before and I am looking for honest professional advise. I am mechanically inclined and can do it all myself, I just need advise on design and what type of system to use. I am looking for something dependable. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

1. How many heads/ zones would I need?
2. What type of heads are recommended?
3. What pipe size should I use for each zone?
4. Where is the best placement for each head?

I installed two systems. I recommend Hunter products as well as the Hunter residential sprinkler system design handbook. Start with the manual.

You need to learn the basics such as psi and gpm.

Use 1 inch valves and 1 inch poly tubing. You have many options for heads.

Don't be intimidated, you have this site for help.

Start with the manual, it will give you design tips.

The design part can look intimidating but it's not.
It's a step by step procedure.
The Hunter handbook is excellent. Available on Hunter's site.

Also, look at System Design for overall advice and descriptions.
Then click on the Step by Step selection for a start to finish guide.

The pipe choice depends on area. If you ground freezes, poly tubing as wsommariva suggests.
If not, PVC might be best and cheaper.

Thanks for the advice. The whole installation looks relatively easy. I just want to make sure I set up enough heads and zones to cover the right areas with the right size pipe

Head to head coverage is most important.
