Zone stays on. Turn controller off, zone still on. Unplug controller, Zone goes off...

Hello, I have a 8 zone system. All zones work… Last fall I
had a problem of the zones coming on at different times than what I had set. The only way to stop the zone was to unplug
the timer. So I bought a different timer. Just put it in this Spring. Everything
seemed to work fine at install, but the next day a zone got stuck on again.
Turning the timer off doesn’t stop it. The only way to turn it off was to unplug
the timer. So, I’m not really sure what to look at next as the valve seems to
open and close properly when I plug the timer back in and manually function the
zone. But it seems hard to believe that I have two bad timers.

Any ideas?

Does your system have a master valve? You might invest in a multimeter and confirm just what the controller is doing when you operate it. (checking voltage at the output terminals)
