Rainbird 100JTV Inline Valve

I recently purchased two 100JTV valves to replace a damaged 100JTV valve. Most websites that show the dimensions of this valve state that it is 4" in length. The new valves I received are 4.25" in length. I spoke to a support person at Rainbird and the valve he had for reference was manufactured in 2005. The length of his valve was 4". Evidentally the older valves of this model was .25" shorter. Are there any of the earlier versions of this valve available?

What would happen if you sanded 1/8 inch off the valve on either side?

Ebay's always a good place to look for older valves.
