Can one common wire go across two modules?

Controller: Rainbird ESP-LX

I inherited a large sprinkler system and I'm having issues with several zones. It would appear that one "bundle" of wires from a set of zones in the field is spread across modules, meaning the control wire for that bundle isn't necessarily plugged into the same module that is currently switched on.

Can that be a problem - or does the control wire not need to be in the same module? (and am I not making any sense at all :))

Thanks!

Doesnt make a difference. However, your troubles probably lie with the common wire of that bundle.
