Piping

I'm replacing heads and where one head should be there's a metal pipe with no threading on it. What is it and how do I replace the head?
Any help would be appreciated.

How did the existing head come off if there are no threads? It sounds like you may have removed part of a stainless steel riser. You would have to dig a bit deeper to get to the actual fitting to tie into. Just a thought.
