Only 1 zone working

I bought a house 3 years ago and was told that the sprinkler system just stopped working the summer before. I've finally found the time and gathered up the patience to deal with it and heres what I've got....

I have a rain bird 16 zone controller with 15 zones connected.

The controller appears to be working, it's keeping time, has programs stored and when I manually activate zones, the controller is switching from zone to zone at the controller (checked wiring with a test light).

Now, weird deal is, when I start manually activating zones, zone 3 is the only zone that actually shoots out any water, but once it's active, it will not turn off. I have to turn off water supply to turn zone 3 off. Once the water stops flowing, I can turn water back on and go on to zone 4-15, but they're dead.

Surely all the solenoids didn't go bad at once?

Since you verified that power is going to each zone at the controller level, my guess is someone put a shovel through the wires. Some were cut, some were just nicked and are shorting. Far more likely than all the solenoids going out at the same time.
First thing I would do is locate a valve or two and see if signal gets through.
If not, time to start tracing wires.

There are a number of activators and tracers HERE that can help.
