continuous discharge from vent

I had a drip coming from my outdoor Wilkins/Zurn sprinkler system. it was recommended that all the washers, springs, and fittings be replaced.
After replacing and repairing all the fittings the vent gushed water continuously, is this normal? does the air in the pipes need time to be forced out before the pressure returns to normal and the vent stops running? or will I have to start over.
