Rain Sensor - timeout too short

I have had a Hunter Rain Clik wired rain sensor for many years now. I have never been satisfied with the timeout delay (vent fully closed). Usually less than 24 hrs. I even tried wrapping a sponge around it.

Any tricks I am missing? Any experience with other wired rain sensors with better timeout control? Hunter X-Core control system if it matters.
