a check valve is meaningless - standards go way way higher than that - most states classify the water in a lawn sprinkler system as toxic, and require a toxic-rated backflow preventer to isolate a lawn sprinkler system from its source water
that comes down to having a Pressure Vacuum Breaker (PVB) in the supply plumbing, for a property where it can be located higher than any sprinkler head that it feeds - if the property slopes uphill from the house, or water source, the required toxic-rated backflow preventer becomes the more costly Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ) device
