Indexing valves use indexing-valve controllers. They might use a controller like the Hunter Pro-C, if you use the advanced programming options to add a delay between zones. Whatever controller other than the original you employ, it must have as many zones as your system does, even though the only wiring connection will be for the Master Valve (that's what your single valve is - a master valve)
Important question - what voltage does your existing valve operate on? If it isn't 24 Volts AC, you should forget about using a standard controller.
