Head is Leaking

I recently added onto our system by running a line to our hillside that is about to be seeded. On that line I have 6 Raibird 5000s and all are buried below ground with the exception of one. There is one that I needed to place above ground on a riser that is about 36 inches high to clear existing bushes that will block its patch. Anyhow, that one head has two problems:

On startup the head sprays water from every hole on the top of the head.

Secondly...once getting to full pressure:
1. Water comes out of the correct spout
2. Water also comes out of the area where the head shaft comes out of the base.

What could be the cause of this since NONE of the other head give me this problem and I did swap heads and again it happens with alternate heads installed on that riser

Your best bet is to swap it out with a shrub model (5000-S-PC). The leaking around the "Wiper seal" (the area where the head shaft comes out of the base) is caused from the drop inpressure from the elevation change in your sytem on that zone (best guess at this point). If you switch to a shrub model, the head will not have to pop-up or retract (counter-act the retraction spring). In other words.... beter performance.

I thought that this might be the case....I went to the rainbird site and cannot see any specs on that particular unit...only what I already have..

Check this web address out ( www.rainbird.com/landscape/products/rotors/5000series.htm ). It won't list any different specs (the specs are all the same) from the standard 5000 series rotor, but you will be able to see what it looks like (so you will know which one to get). If you look in the top r/h corner, it will be the shortest one shown on the right. I feel this will be the better choice for you, unless you would consider trying a rotory nozzle ( www.rainbird.com/landscape/products/rotarynozzles/index.htm ). What radius do you need to achieve (if it is 24' or less, the rotory nozzle will work)?
