Renting a Pipe Puller

Our local rental shop has a Ditch Witch 225sx they rent out by the day. I am tempted to rent this machine to pull the 1" poly pipe I plan to install in my home-brew irrigation system. I don't have a lot of exprience using heavy machinerybut have some experience using small tractors, and once succesfully used a mini excivator in a one-day rental. My question is this: Are these machines terribly difficult to use for someone like me who has no previous experience using one? I'd rather pull my pipe than dig trenches with a trencher, but am a little uneasy about using the puller. Thanks for your thoughts.

It is very easy to use once you get the hang of it. I have the same machine, there should be a yellow handle that controls the up/down and also the blade engagement lever. Bring the blade down, and as soon as you get close to the ground, flip the yellow lever up and the blade will vibrate, bring the blade into the ground until you can barely see any blade and off you go.

Pulling machines are as easy as that. I would highly suggest you rent one for a day, although it might be a little spendy it saves A LOT of time!

A word of caution. Know where all of your utilities are as you will go right through them if you are not careful, not to mention underground power wires can kill you.
Ps my friend lost his phone for a week.

If you want to cut out the pulling for you, have a contractor come out and pull your pipe. This usuially costs bout 200-400 and that eliminates your hard work.

I rented a trencher that they delivered on a flatbed (?!); nothing like the little ones I had seen on DIY or HGTV shows. The guy from the rental place spent 45 mins showing me how to use it. Aside from a little run-in with one of my garbage cans, everything went fine. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>
