Hunter SVC Controller buttons seem dead

My single valve controller battery failed & I assume the capacitor held it up for a while. Anyway, it was dead for maybe a week before I put a new battery in. Immediately the display began to flash several icons at once and nothing worked per the instructions. Removed battery for maybe 30 sec and re-installed. Now display shows clock icon, battery icon, time -of-day, and day. But the hooker is that nothing ever changes, no matter how I hold various buttons and button combos. Any ideas on a way forward?
