locating existing underground irrigation pipes?

This may be a dumb questions but does anyone have advice for locating existing underground irrigation pipes? The former homeowner had a system installed and some of the areas work okay, but others need upgrades. I want to try to locate the existing pipes. Any tools I can rent that would locate the existing network? Thanks for any advice.

If you don't know where the control valves are located, you can rent a wire locator. If you have the control vales located, that covers most of what you can do. Plastic pipe isn't easily tracked by electronic means.

Try checking near your water source. The irrigation system is often connected to the house water rather than a pump. If so, there may be a back flow preventor. You can find that where the municipal water meter is attached to the house. Once you have found that try probing in the ground with a long screwdriver or something similar, but do it carefully so you don't puncture any pipes. If you find anything that is about six inches in diameter under the surface then that should be a valve. You can do the same thing if there is a sprinkler timer, search that area.
