Cleaning very old rainbird valves

I have very old rainbird valves that I don't believe use a diaphram. They have a sort of plunger that opens and closes the valve. I have had them stick open before and was able to remove the solenoid and plunger and clean the dirt off the valve seat and they worked. I can't remember how I removed the solenoid and plunger. I am afraid I am going to break something if I force it to unscrew. Can you identify what valve I am referring to and tell me how to take it apart without damaging it?
Thanks,
Jerry
