replace wiring

Can anyone help. I live in Mass. Tried starting up my system and found the wires split, wet, dirty. I think I need to replace the Solenoids. Question, where should i start; also, why does my valve box get so wet, muddy etc. Is it easy just to replace all solenoids? Final question, where do I find the main electrical souce supplying the Solenoids??? Hope this makes sense.

Thanks

Your first investment should be a multimeter for checking matters electrical with your sprinklers.
